Abstract | A pilot research study examined the perspectives of workers in the machining, automotive repair, and printing and graphic arts industries on skill usage and the effects of technological change in the workplace. Research was conducted using site visits, job-shadowing, and in-depth interviews to develop the survey instrument, which was completed by about 700 self-selected workers. Using extensive quotations from the workers surveyed to draw profiles of people in each of the industries, the study determined that workers use a wide variety of manual and mental skills on the job and that these requirements are changing all the time. The change in skill level is determined by how the firm is organized to accommodate the new technology; however, most firms are not integrating education and training into their workplace in a way that effectively incorporates the changing technology and the workers' desires to increase their skills. Few workers over 40 years old in machining and printing were using computerized equipment; firms tended to encourage only their younger workers to pursue skills upgrading. The study concluded that school curricula and training programs must be revised to reflect the new realities in the workplace. (Five appendixes include the study's methodology; questions and responses of all surveyed; and all printers, machinists, and automobile repair technicians surveyed. Fifteen references are included.)
