AbstractThe Students' Evaluations of Educational Quality (SEEQ) instrument measures distinct dimensions of teaching effectiveness. Previous research has shown that ratings of a given instructor tend to generalize over different course offerings, but research has not examined whether each instructor had a generalizable, distinguishable profile of scale scores (e.g., high on enthusiasm but low on organization). This study considered 3,079 sets of class-average responses for 123 instructors collected over a 13-year period. The profile of 9 SEEQ scales (learning/value, instructor enthusiasm, organization/clarity, group interaction, individual rapport, breadth of coverage, examinations/grading, assignments/readings, and workload/difficulty) for each instructor was distinct from those of other instructors, was consistent across course offerings over the 13-year period, and generalized across undergraduate and graduate level courses. The results have important implications for the use of profiles as formative feedback, summative evaluations, and further research on students' evaluations of teaching. Four graphs illustrate the discussion, and there is one table of analysis results. An appendix contains factor analysis results for 24,158 sets of data. Nineteen references are included. (Author/SLD)
