Abstract	This report summarizes what was learned from a series of studies on nonformal education (NFE) conducted in the last half of the 1980s by the International Institute for Educational Planning and draws lessons from these studies for planning and policy making. Source material includes four national case studies in Argentina, Canada, Hungary, and the USSR. The case studies mapped out the different components of the diversified NFE field; analyzed their relative importance; and identified the main determinants of the diversification process and its effects, examining the role of planning in this process. This study focused on NFE in developing countries. Chapters 1-3 of the report summarize what has been learned about NFE, such as forms and dynamics of the diversification process, the different forms of out-of-school education, who is organizing different forms of education, and who benefits. Chapters 4-5 examine the implications for planning in both quantitative and qualitative terms, including the information base and planning for NFE at different levels and in the future. The book includes 20 references, the questionnaire used in Canada, and excerpts from a questionnaire used in the United Kingdom. (KC)
