Abstract | This module presents the philosophical perspective that the fostering of family/professional partnerships is an integral part of effective service delivery to young children with disabilities. The module addresses the issues involved in nurturing the development of dynamic working relationships with families. The issues include: (1) understanding the impact of the child on the family; (2) establishing trusting relationships with families; (3) recognizing and utilizing parental expertise; (4) understanding the impact of intervention on the family system and individualizing family involvement; and (5) facilitating "parent to parent" and "family to family" support. Appendices contain a "wish list" of what parents want from early intervention professionals and a list of 17 suggested readings. (JDD) |
