Abstract	Nutrition education is the theme of this issue of "Children in the Tropics," which emphasizes an analysis of the situation of nutrition education programs, particularly in third world countries. It is noted that in most cases, it is necessary to integrate aspects of nutrition education into broader programs that encompass agricultural and food issues in biological, cultural, economic, social, and cognitive contexts. It is suggested that there is no reproducible model for nutrition education, but that local settings and populations must be the foundation on which nutrition programs are built. The nutrition education approach presented involves: (1) analyzing the situation--that is, determining nutritional status and food consumption, and finding out what determines dietary consumption and behavior; (2) engaging the participation of the population; and (3) developing programs, including identifying target groups, messages, channels of communication, evaluation, and personnel training. A project involving education about food and diet in a nursery school in West Africa is described. A technical note on an educational series on food designed for small children by the International Children's Centre is included. Appended is a grid to be used in the study of local environments and living conditions. (LB)
