AbstractThe differences and similarities between education and the private sector are analyzed as they both engage in efforts to fundamentally restructure their operations. To bridge the cultural gap between business and education, a workable strategy that advances direct and sustained private-sector involvement in education reform is proposed. Part 1 of this paper identifies fundamental concerns shared by business and education that leaders in both education and the private sector can use as a springboard from which to reach a common ground. These include: (1) knowing where you are going: rethinking mission; (2) downsizing: doing more with less; and (3) centralizing or decentralizing: doing things better. Part 2 presents a conceptual framework that business and education leaders can use together to tackle key organizational issues currently confronted by school systems. A key part of this conceptual approach is the comprehensive, systematic analysis that business leaders use in reorganizing their companies. The value of such an analysis in business and in educational reform is outlined. (18 references) (RR)
