AbstractThis training guide was created for organizations in which older adults serve as caregivers for children of 5-14 years of age during the times when they are not in school. The training curriculum was designed so that anyone familiar with the developmental needs of school-age children and the needs and aspirations of older adults would be able to use it. Those most likely to use the training curriculum are child care providers, college-level instructors, members of organizations that provide technical assistance to child care providers, and members of community education institutions. The eight hours of training are divided into four segments of two hours each. The first session covers the needs of children and adult volunteers, ground rules and expectations, and successful outcomes. In the second session, topics include changes in the family; ways to meet children's after-school needs; and the process of developing a list of interests, skills, and personal qualities that may support children's growth and development. Differences between older and younger school-age children, and ways to encourage desired behaviors and discourage unwanted behaviors, are considered in the third session. The fourth session extends the discussion on promoting desired behavior and handling difficult behaviors. Suggested readings and sources of additional information are listed. (RH)
