AbstractThis resource guide is designed to assist career-vocational educators in providing disadvantaged students with the skills wanted by employers and to increase educators' effectiveness in teaching academically and economically disadvantaged students with limited English proficiency (LEP). The guide is divided into five sections. "The Disadvantaged Student" provides an overview of the educational problems of disadvantaged (including LEP) students with general suggestions, based on current research, on how to increase their achievement. "Transition Experiences: School to Work" contains strategies to promote successful school-to-work transition through career awareness, career exploration, employability skills training, and work experience education. "Integration of Academic Core Curriculum and Vocational Content" contains specific strategies to improve students' performance in reading, writing, mathematics, problem solving/critical thinking, and oral and nonverbal communication skills with examples in all vocational subject areas. "Effective Teaching Strategies" describes the teaching strategies and support services that should be provided to ensure the success of disadvantaged students in career-vocational education. "Effective Program Practices" describes programs that show promise for providing vocational education to all students. Asterisks in the narrative refer the reader to references at the end of the section for a specific resource. An annotated listing of 15 resources concludes the guide. (YLB)
