Abstract	To investigate the extent of literacy programs in the workplace, an indepth look was taken at the different types of literacy programs in the workplace to determine what can help the state of literacy in the United States. The literacy efforts in the workplace among federal, state, and local government, schools, unions, businesses, corporations, and the community at large were determined from sources found in research and university libraries, educational data bases, and professional journal articles. It was found that many successful efforts exist and are based on a collaborative or partnership effort. However, it was determined that many more programs are needed to address the workplace literacy problem. The Federal Government as well as state and local government, schools, unions, businesses, corporations, and the communities at large must join in the effort to help erase illiteracy from the workplace. Illiteracy in the workplace is a pluralistic problem that needs priority now if the United States wants to strengthen its economy by the year 2000. (26 references) (NLA)
