AbstractBased on a meeting of experts convened in Lome, Togo in June, 1989, this digest aims to demonstrate what is understood to be the broad potential of the child-to-child approach, which many people think of as being applicable only to health education. The digest contains three main sections. Section A highlights the original cultural references of the concept. Particular attention is given to the transition from traditional educative models to a transcultural, child-to-child approach in public health education. Section B offers examples of this practical application in a number of Sub-Saharan countries of Africa, including Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, and Nigeria. Section C emphasizes the potential of the child-to-child approach in teaching all subjects in the elementary school. Annexes provide recommendations of the Lome Meeting, citations of expert papers presented at the Lome Meeting, and a child-to-child activity sheet. (RH)
