Abstract | This bibliography contains annotated citations of primarily non-commercial instructional materials for adult literacy education in English as a Second Language (ESL). All are for learners at beginning to intermediate English language skill levels, and were selected for ease of use by volunteers, relevance to an urban area, overall applicability to ESL populations speaking a diversity of languages, and attractiveness and usefulness of design, layout, and packaging. The bibliography is divided into seven subject areas (language experience, reading, folk tales, coping skills, grammar, citizenship, and additional instructor resources). Each section provides an introduction, annotated entries, and brief suggestions for developing similar materials on one's own. Additional sections contain an ESL skill level chart, discussion of other state and national ESL resources, appendixes, and a title index. Appended materials include procedures for ordering and using materials from the Free Library of Philadelphia's Reader Development Program, addresses of publishers and distributors, branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia, a publications order form, and a materials recommendation form.
