AbstractBegun as an experimental channel of the European Institute for the Media within the DELTA research program of the European Community, Channel e is Europe's first educational, training, and informative programming service. Programs are broadcast by communications satellite to a potential mass audience of 320 million people. Designed for use on the ASTRA satellite, Channel e offers educational television programs for migrant communities; young Europeans seeking employment outside their own countries; and continuing education, including second language instruction, vocational education, and open university courses. Program implementation begins in 1991 with 1 hour broadcast per day, 5 days a week, and should increase to a 3-hour day, 5 days a week by 1994. Future plans for Channel e include the development of medium and long-term use of this service in formal and informal education throughout Europe; further experimentation in the areas of language transfer and interactive broadcasting; and the establishment of commercial profit centers designed to bring additional revenue to Channel e. Listings of the members of the Channel e steering committee and the members of the advisory council of the European Institute for the Media, Manchester, are appended. (DB)
