Abstract | This report summarizes information provided by 870 National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) active member schools (in existence over 5 years and located in the United States or U.S. territories) surveyed in the spring of 1990. Information, which is supplied in narrative form and in 46 statistical tables, includes tuition, teacher salary, and administrator salary data for the 1990-91 school year. Data are reported in an aggregate manner according to common classifications of school type, school size, and geographic region. The report also discusses and analyzes tuition and salary trends, adjusting for changes in the cost of living over time. The base year for analysis has been set at l981-82. Other trend years include 1985-86 and 1988-89 through 1990-91. Median figures are used to summarize trend data in this report. Tuition and salary data from the survey of 33 Canadian member schools are summarized in 4 tables out of a total of 46. Among the report highlights are the following: (1) student median tuitions have increased by 7.4 percent over the past year; (2) the day student median tuition for 1990-91 is $6,429 and the boarding student median tuition is $14,601; (3) teacher median salaries rose 5.8 percent to $25,207 in 1989-90; and (4) head median cash salaries increased by 7.7 percent to $70,000 for 1990-91.
