AbstractThis report provides a summary of the education and training arrangements in the 12 member states of the European Community (EC) from school programs to technician and professional training. The introduction traces the history of initiatives and legislation in the EC and its related organizations with respect to qualifications, training, and employability. The next section presents a brief note on each member state and a broad outline of the education and training systems. The following section highlights the most significant features of craft worker training. Special attention is paid to "alternance" training (alternating on- and off-the-job training). The next chapter deals with vocational qualifications at the technician and paraprofessional level and at the professional and managerial level. In those countries in which the vocational qualification is closely related to the kind of educational institution involved, the institutions are described. The report concludes with a discussion of problems related to the mobility of workers across borders and the opening up of the market in Europe. Current initiatives and priorities are addressed. (Appendixes include a brief account of main legal documents that form the legal basis for action at the EC level in the field of vocational training; educational statistics; 76 print references; and 33 institutional resources.)
