| Abstract | A plan to promote parental school choice, namely, the Cambridge Controlled Choice School Desegregation Plan, is described in this report. The introduction presents a definition and the history of school choice, and the second chapter offers a program description of the community context, an overview of the public school situation in Cambridge, school and program options, parent participation and decision making, and the student assignment process. Program outcomes are described in the third chapter, with attention to socioeconomic and ethnic ratios, enrollment, the percentage of students attending their schools of choice, attendance and retention, achievement, and future educational and career plans. The fourth chapter, on school improvement, examines the issues of district roles and school autonomy. It is concluded that the program was successful in achieving voluntary desegregation, improved community relations, and a gradual overall increase in student achievement levels.
