AbstractThis book presents an overview of the World Health Organization's implementation of continuing education for change in health care in Europe over the past 10 years. The report is organized in six sections. The introductory section asserts the need for change in health care and the rationale for providing continuing education for health care workers in order to effect such changes. Section 2 focuses on planning, implementing, evaluating, and organizing continuing education for change. In Section 3, the present state of continuing education in Europe is outlined, with emphasis on primary health care. It also examines the aims and methods of the country reports and case studies that follow in later sections. The fourth section suggests ways that continuing education can be more effective and more accountable in the future. Sections 5 and 6 present 19 country reports and 10 case studies of continuing education, especially in primary health care, in 1986-87 in European countries. Reasons for the studies are also examined. Appendixes to the report include a list of the country and case study reports and background papers, a 61-item bibliography on continuing education, and a glossary. (KC)
