AbstractThis booklet, building on the premise that humans have a natural affinity with poetry and from an early age associate rhyme and rhythms with the joys of learning language, develops activities that enhance appreciation, engagement, response, and discrimination. The ideas presented in the booklet have been tried by practicing teachers in their classrooms. The booklet sets out some principles and possibilities with an invitation to teachers to explore these for themselves rather than favoring any one way of working with poetry. Further reading is recommended throughout. Part 1, "Working with Poetry," is a general introduction to ways in which poetry can become part of students' language learning. It offers suggestions for involving students in the meaning, language, relevance, and pleasure of poetry. Part 2, "Writing Poetry," is about students writing their own poetry. It gives ideas for guiding students to produce quality work. Part 3, "Writing About Poetry," deals with teaching students to write in a genuine and rigorous way. In part 4, "A Collection of Poetry Lessons," practicing classroom teachers explain their own successful sequences of poetry lessons, incorporating some of the ideas from the previous sections. (MG)
