Abstract | This study examined the differences between Illinois beginning elementary and secondary teachers' perceptions of staff development activities and their sources of assistance during the first year. A survey in spring 1989 received responses from 601 elementary and 234 secondary teachers. Beginning elementary teachers rated the importance of staff development activities significantly higher than did secondary teachers in three areas: "students,""community," and "staff." Elementary teachers perceived themselves as significantly more successful than did secondary teachers. It was concluded that, due to the differences between elementary and secondary teachers, a "one-size-fits-all" approach to staff development is not appropriate; rather, the approach needs to be tailored to respond to the expressed needs of first-year teachers. Tables displaying the data are appended. (JD) |
