Abstract | Focused on early childhood development, this "UNICEF Intercom" asserts that developmental programs should aim to give children a fair chance at growth beyond survival. First presented are moral, scientific, social equity, economic, population, and programatic arguments for looking beyond the fundamental objective of saving young lives. Supplemental articles concerning Vietnam, China, rural Africa, and other countries, recount recent UNICEF efforts in this field, enumerate types of child development approaches, examine the importance of educating parents, analyze CHILD-to-child programs, and look at how children are cared for in some countries while their mothers are at work. Additional materials concern the opening of the International Child Development Center in Florence, Italy, a field visit to Bangladesh after the floods, immunization in the Dominican Republic, statistics concerning relationships between national health and wealth, medical education, communication and visual literacy in Kathmandu (Nepal), development education, new publications, fund-raising with Spider-Man, and a special event marking United Nations Day in Barbados.
