AbstractNew England's economic competitiveness in a global economy and the role of the area's colleges and universities in contributing to that competitiveness are discussed, including a review of a similar analysis from the perspective of the state of Maine. The report examines information developed from a study having three research components: (1) the internationalization of the New England economy; (2) the attitudes of corporate, government, and university leaders on higher education's role in preparing for a global economy; and (3) a 40-campus study of what is and is not happening in this preparation. Recommendations at the regional level and for higher education institutions are presented. In addition, Maine's economy and the state's higher education institutions are examined in the context of being able to meet international competitiveness. Among the topics covered are: Maine's trading position and international awareness; business-university cooperation and coordination in developing competitiveness; R&D investments; funding availability; technology transfer and technical assistance; and educational needs. Recommendations are presented to enhance the Maine higher education community's response to the challenge of global competitiveness. The appendix includes a trade profile for Maine. (GLR)
