AbstractA panel of instructors in the Speech Communication program at the University of South Dakota presented five papers containing the findings from an extensive analysis of their introductory course, the Fundamentals of Speech. The purpose of the analysis was to determine the result of adapting the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) to specific institutional needs. The panel reported that the PSI sections enrolled a maximum of 30 students in each section, that traditional sections involved self-contained groups of up to 24 students, and that data were collected from nearly 400 students (who all completed six questionnaires each at the beginning and the end of the semester) in an effort to compare the two forms of instruction. Titles and authors of the panel papers presenting the findings include: "Introduction" (Cathy Bast); "Student Communicator Style in Traditional versus PSI Classrooms: A Study in Development and Change" (Janet K. Lewis and Julianna Hammond); "Developing Rhetorical Sensitivity: Do Pedagogical Methods Make a Difference?" (Doug Brenner and Cindy Stampe); "Cognitive Complexity and the Basic Course: A Differential Study in Student Development" (Cathy Bast and Mari Peters); "Differential Impacts of Traditional and PSI Basic Speech Courses on Communication Anxieties" (James J. Lewis and Pete Obermeier); and "Effects of Pedagogy on Speech Performance" (John McKiernan and Eric Uecker). (MG)
