Abstract | This project evaluated three modules, which were developed to meet key basic training requirements common to part-time workers in different branches of community education (adult education, community development, and youth work). Draft modules were sent to about 40 individuals or organizations in the field for comment on their structure and relevance. Each module was piloted at two different sites in urban, rural, or intermediate areas in Scotland. To assess the suitability of the modules for training in community education, researchers interviewed a sample of the participants and all of the trainers. Overall, trainers were very satisfied and regarded the modules as effective. Modules were perceived as flexible in terms of form, content, adaptability to a variety of local contexts, and needs of individuals with different educational experiences. Trainees named as positive features of the modules the range of teaching methods used, courses relevant to perceived needs, opportunities to practice skills needed for their jobs, and opportunities to meet with other part-timers. Respondents mentioned these drawbacks and problems: lack of challenge, irrelevance, duplication, and venue. (Four references are cited. Interview schedules are appended.) (YLB) |
