Abstract | This guide briefly discusses the uses, strengths, and limitations of various assessment instruments in English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) classes for adults. The types of instruments selected for discussion are limited to those that are used in Adult Education Cooperatives in Texas, or those that are readily available to those cooperatives. The guide is divided into three sections that are intended to provide access to assessment instruments according to students' general levels of proficiency, classroom situation, and title. Section 1 contains category headings for beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, and a list of the most appropriate placement/assessment instrument(s) for each level. Section 2 briefly describes a number of real-life classroom situations and lists assessment/placement instruments that fit each situation, and section 3 provides a list of readily available assessment instruments, alphabetically by name, with a brief discussion of their uses, strengths, and limitations in adult ESL classes.
