Abstract | A shift in instructional focus to student needs and interests spurred the development of a different approach to French second language program design in Alberta. A practical curriculum planning model is offered that is based on: (1) communicative and student-centered activities; (2) responsiveness to teacher needs; and (3) supporting planning for evaluation. Long- and short-term planning are considered separately. The discussion of long-term planning outlines the following components: planning stages; means used to select instructional activities, including consultation of didactic and other materials, choice of theme, compilation of activities, guiding principles, flexibility, and use of activities to develop a theme; and linking instructional modules developed to an overall plan of linguistic development. A section on short-term planning similarly describes the stages of planning, including the specific steps in planning an instructional module (choice of knowledge and performance objectives, elaboration of activities, and development of objective and observation grids) and compilation of objectives into planning tables, and techniques for organizing planning tables. Finally, a sample reading comprehension unit is outlined in detail. Charts, tables, and other materials for use in curriculum planning by this method are appended, including short- and long-term planning tables for first through sixth grades. (MSE) |
