AbstractThis study examines the reasons why Hispanic youth drop out of school. Three groups of Hispanic interviewers gathered information from a total of 245 Hispanic dropouts. Eighteen teachers interviewed 140 dropouts, 15 adolescents interviewed 72 dropouts, and 33 businessmen, of whom 6 responded to the interview for a relative who had dropped out. The following reasons why Hispanic students drop out of school are reported: (1) school-related factors were the most frequently reported; (2) economic factors were reported by more than 20 percent of the dropouts; (3) family-related factors were reported by at least 25 percent of the dropouts; (4) peer-related factors were reported by only eight of the dropouts; (5) about 20 percent of the dropouts reported generally favorable attitudes towards school despite the decision to drop out; (6) 35% of the dropouts reported positive attitudes towards school personnel; (7) about 40 percent of the dropouts reported positive attitudes towards school subjects; (8) all dropouts expressed specific dislikes about both teachers and school; and (9) slightly more than half of the dropouts indicated that an improvement in family-related factors would have been necessary for them to remain in school. Recommendations for dropout prevention are suggested. A list of 32 references (endnotes) is appended. (FMW)
