Abstract | This phrasebook is designed to introduce newly-arrived Iranian residents to the daily activities of American life. The phrases and supplementary vocabulary in the book's 19 units cover a wide range of situations. Topics include coping with the language barrier, useful forms of etiquette, giving information about oneself, recognizing signs, converting weights and measures, using numbers, dealing with money, dealing with time, locating things, describing things and people, doing things, going places, conveying information, health, food, clothing, housing, jobs, and schools. The English phrases included are selected for their directness, brevity, and relevance to the needs of newly-arrived residents. Most are presented in the form of two-line dialogues. Following these units a list of useful words provides additional terms that are most frequently needed. A map of the United States locating all states and major cities is also included. Each unit supplies phrases written in English with parallel Farsi translations. (MSE) |
