| Abstract | Four working papers in linguistics are presented. "Basic Configurations of Pragmatic Structuring" (Robert A. Dooley) presents evidence for basic or unmarked pragmatic configurations in three Brazilian languages: Topic-Comment in Mbya Guarani, Comment-Topic in Hixkaryana, and Focus-Presupposition in Xavante. "The Syllable Structure of Seri" (Stephen A. Marlett) contains a detailed discussion of issues relevant to syllable structure in the Seri language, including the sonority hierarchy, the internal structure of syllables, representation of long vowels and round consonants, the relationship of stress to syllabification, and the distinction between the syllable structure of inflected and uninflected words. "Extraction from Complement Clauses in Koine Greek" (Stephen A. Marlett) examines one constraint on word order, and shows how it affects the understanding of two verses (from the New Testament/1 Corinthians 14:12 and 1 John 5:16) that seem to be counterexamples to it. "From Meaning to Text: Semantic Representation in the Meaning-Text Linguistic Theory and a New Type of Monolingual Dictionary" (Igor A. Melcuk) expounds a different approach to natural language, the Meaning-Text Theory, focusing on the theory's general structure and a new type of lexicon. (MSE) |
