AbstractFollowing a lengthy discussion of urban dropout rates, possible risk factors, and the inadequacies of the general equivalency diploma (GED) and alternative high school curricula, this study consulted GED students to determine the factors contributing to their dropping out of high school. The study also explored students' reasons for attending GED programs, their career aspirations, grade retention history, past school attitudes, self-esteem, and academic achievement levels. Data were collected via a non-evaluative survey instrument, using a sample of 200 adults enrolled in the GED program at Thornton Community College (Chicago, Illinois). Only 89 of the questionnaires were usable; 90 percent of respondents were black. The self-devised instrument contained 10 personal data items, 35 dropout factor items, and three open-ended questions on GED enrollment, aspirations, number of years since leaving school, and reasons for returning to school. Findings show that very few sampled adults had been in trouble with the law, influenced adversely by peers, involved in gangs, suspended from school, abused as children, absent, ill, disabled, afraid to go to school, or raised in a dangerous community. Data suggest that poverty and socioeconomic background were contributing factors to dropout rates. Both sexes realized they needed an education to succeed in life; many wanted to continue their education, secure employment, or advance in their jobs. A significant number desired to attend college. Recommendations for keeping youth in school are given. Included are 15 references, a bibliography of 24 items, 7 data summary tables, and the study questionnaire. (MLH)
