AbstractProfessional development, a continuing process of activities that enhance professional growth, should be planned and managed by the individual. Although part-time adult educators may be able to consult with supervisors in planning professional development, more often they work in relative isolation and must take sole responsibility for their inservice needs. Development of a plan provides a framework for the discipline and commitment needed to achieve changes. One type of plan, the Personal Professional Development Model, has four phases: initiating, planning, managing, and evaluative. The success of a professional development plan requires identification of resources such as print and nonprint materials, staff development opportunities, and other adult educators. Feedback is also necessary as a measurement of progress. Guidelines for managing professional development include: (1) stating no more than three objectives; (2) acknowledging the existence of deterrents such as lack of time, resources, or support; (3) forming a network for collegial feedback; (4) making site visits; (5) pairing with a peer to learn a new technique; (6) joining professional associations and attending conferences; and (7) using ERIC resources.
