Abstract | Several scholars in the field of teacher education recently have proposed the use of cases as a pedagogical strategy in teacher education. In this paper, Wilson discusses her preliminary attempts at using a case to teach prospective teachers about the role that subject matter knowledge plays in pedagogical thinking. The author begins the paper by establishing the intellectual and practical contexts of the case by discussing both current research in the field of subject matter knowledge in teaching and the teacher education course which she teaches. Wilson then presents a case of a new teacher whose subject matter knowledge was not sufficient for his instructional purposes and plans. The paper ends with a set of questions that the author has developed to use in conjunction with the case in teacher education courses. In sum, the paper is a case of using a case, a story told by a teacher educator about how she has used one particular case in teaching prospective teachers. (Author) |
