AbstractThis document describes and assesses the process of adapting Paulo Friere's ideas in a Western European urban context. The Adult Learning Project (ALP), in the Gorgie Dalry section of Edinburgh, Scotland, is a sustained experiment in the application of Freire's educational principles. Following an introduction, chapter 1 describes the history of ALP and development of the ALP process of investigation, building learning programs, and supporting action outcomes. Chapter 2 discusses changes in British society in the period leading up to ALP's beginning, aspects of the community education context in Scotland, and the life and ideas of Freire. Chapter 3 presents as case studies three ALP investigations (Living in Gorgie Dalry, Health and Well-Being, and Parents and Authority) and accompanying learning programs. Chapter 4 presents three action outcomes (Play in the Terraces, Skills Exchange, and Parents Centre), which emerged from the ALP learning programs discussed in chapter 3, and workshops on photography and writing. Chapter 5 reports the influence of ALP on participants, ALP staff, and fellow professionals and voluntary workers in adult and community education. Chapter 6 reflects on the experience of ALP as a whole, identifying factors that have helped ALP to thrive and pointing out implications for the management of innovation in adult learning, with a view to spreading the influence of such projects in the mainstream of education. The document concludes with a glossary, a 15-item bibliography, and information about ALP students. (CML)
