Abstract | At one level, the title of this book implies a concern for the skills of those whose profession is to teach geography to the young people of the world. These skills include understanding students, the subject matter of geography, the strategies that may be adopted in the classroom, and ultimately, the ways in which these are combined to create effective geography criteria. At another level, skills in geographical education may be taken to refer to those skills that students may be expected to develop as a result of their experiences in their geography classrooms. The book consists of six sections, each of which addresses a major issue: (1) teaching styles; (2) learners' skills and abilities; (3) skills for living; (4) curriculum development; (5) continuing education; and (6) research in geographical education. Each section begins with an overview followed by 6 to 10 articles by international geography educators addressing the issues of developing skills in various contexts. The articles are illustrated with numerous charts, graphs, and figures, and most include a bibliography. (JB) |
