AbstractThe book presents the results of a survey of the daily life and attitudes of 90 English families with an adolescent with Down Syndrome (DS). The first chapter reviews the typical development of DS children. Chapter 2 provides demographic data including schooling (94% attended schools for children with severe learning difficulties), residence (83% were living with their own natural families), and social class distribution (same as general population). Chapter 3 looks at daily living skills while the development of adequate communication skills is considered in Chapter 4, noting that 40% of the younger teenagers used only keyword utterances. Chapter 5, on achievements in school, reports that few of the teenagers had developed practical levels of reading, writing, or number skills. Chapter 6 indicates that most leisure interests tend to be passive and solitary. Chapter 7 looks at general behavior and concludes that most DS teenagers do not have serious behavior problems. The next two chapters, on physical and sexual development, finds the DS subjects to be shorter than average with sexual behavior rarely a problem. Chapter 10, on family life, reports that while the DS teenagers require a lot of attention and while their degree of independence is much less than that of their non-DS peers, their parents did not view these factors in a particularly negative light. The final chapter offers some typical case histories and conclusions. (DB)
