Abstract | This document reports on a training workshop on educating adults and on the birth of a new professional association. Section A describes the workshop's rationale, purpose, participants, environment, atmosphere, field trips, study groups, inauguration of the Commonwealth Association for the Education and Training of Adults (CAETA), speeches, and cultural and social exchanges. Included is a lengthy excerpt from a speech by New Zealander Penny Eames on the impact that India had on her during the length of the workshop. Section B contains reports from study groups on literacy and basic education, cooperatives in adult education, agriculture and rural development, vocational education and income-generating activities, women's education, and urban adult education. Section C is an attempt to draw out issues that emerged from discussion in the workshop as a whole. It addresses basic values; adult education, training, and development; the approach to curriculum; structures of adult education and training; cautions to adult educators; and a statement that in all social and economic development people are the greatest resource and the greatest need. In addition, this section contains a paper written on behalf of the workshop by Kazim Bacchus, University of Alberta, which covers these topics: what is vocational education or vocationally oriented education; evidence on the effectiveness of vocationally oriented education, policy implications, and program implications. Section D provides details about the inauguration of CAETA and attempts to chart its future course. Appendices contain lists of the interim steering committee, local organizing committee, support staff, volunteers, field visits, papers presented, and workshop participants. (CML) |
