| Abstract | This paper investigates routine "opening turns" in telephone conversations, examining their variety and adaptability, and extending E. A. Schegloff's model to account for them. Following a review of previous research on telephone openings, the paper describes the notion of "reduction" as offered by M. R. Whalen and D. H. Zimmerman, and discusses tests of the resulting model against a data sample (not presented in the paper) of 25 calls between acquaintances and 34 calls between strangers in non-emergency situations. The paper concludes with a statement of the "reversal of sign" model, emphasizing that what may best explain reductions and expansions to models of telephone openings is not the exigency of the occasion, but the extent to which the two speaking parties share a conversational history. Two tables of data are included, and 29 references and an "extending the openings" model are attached. (SR) |
