Abstract | The increasing loss of biological diversity, resulting from the loss of genetic diversity, the extinction of species, and the destruction of ecosystems, constitutes a crisis of global proportions. The resources being committed to its resolution are relatively small. This document summarizes a survey of U.S.-based organizations involved in biological diversity research and conservation activities in developing countries in 1987. Institutions included the U.S. government, nongovernment organizations, universities, museums, zoos, charitable foundations, and botanical gardens. In all, 873 projects, active in 86 developing countries were analyzed. Included in this document are survey methods, results and conclusions; a copy of the questionnaire used; a list of classification categories used for activities; a list of the surveyed institutions; and a list of activities by region. Appendices constitute the bulk of the document. (CW) |
