Abstract | This Peace Corps guide to individual, independent, or group study of Chichewa provides basic conversational vocabulary and phrases necessary for Peace Corps volunteer survival skills in Malawi. The 20 lessons consist of dialogues, vocabulary, and exercises on these topics: greetings; self-introduction; discussing others; relatives; professions; asking and telling directions; traveling; using the bus; requests, apologies, and gratitude; telling time; counting; days, weeks, months, and years; weather; at home and in the village; household chores; identification of objects and domestic animals; at the market; locatives and possessives; parts of the body; at the hospital; entertainment; clothes and colors; hiring help; and expressing feelings. Appended materials include additional helpful grammatical information, useful vocabulary, a summary of verb forms and tenses, health-related dialogues and vocabulary, proverbs, and songs to assist in language training.
