Abstract | This book presents 36 case studies, based on data gathered from first-year teachers throughout the country, that provide direct involvement with some of the most common and important experiences new teachers face. By typing together practice and theory in the study of real problems, prospective teachers will be able to: (1) identify and use major theoretical underpinnings of educational practice; (2) become directly involved in decision-making, a primary function in teaching; (3) enhance critical thinking skills; and (4) prepare themselves to solve problems that occur daily in teaching. The cases cover a wide range of topics, including how to choose the right first job; how to plan and implement instruction; how to cope with pressure from colleagues, parents and administrators; how to face a teachers' strike; and how to assess and evaluate both students and self.
