Abstract | Students in the community schools of Lexington, Kentucky must realize the international connections that exist between Lexington and the world, and be aware of the impact of world events on their own community. These international connections can be revealed through learning activities utilizing local history, international restaurants, street names, and the horse industry. An introductory "Can You Guess?" section poses questions on international relationships that can be found in the Lexington area, as does a "Lexington and the World" bingo game. Restaurant menus are good introductions to foods and cultures of foreign countries (five menus and ten suggested activities are included). Suggestions for using Lexington street names or horse racing silks and jerseys to develop international connections are given. A diary of a Lexingtonian's trek through Nepal, along with two maps of Nepal provides an introduction to that mountainous country. Businesses located in the Lexington area with international connections provide other opportunities for study (a doll business, a Toyota plant, the Kentucky horse industry). A discussion on "Homelessness: A Problem for Lexington and the World" concludes the study guide. (PPB) |
