Abstract | The typical traits of a ready-made system as well as those of an individualized system are constituent characteristics of distance education. Within the framework set by these qualities and the extent to which they differ from one another, one seeks to achieve the fundamental educational aim of distance students' autonomy. The way institutions see this aim of autonomy is dependent on their respective concept of man. Definition of these concepts allows us to determine what may be or is understood by autonomy. These differing concepts of self (or concepts of man) and of autonomy are objectified in different types of institutions offering predominantly ready-made or predominantly individualized forms of distance study.
