AbstractThe academic discipline of political science at the University of California's Education Abroad Program (EAP) is examined with a focus on: what academic instruction consists of at selected host universities; how effective did the participants feel the instruction was in increasing their knowledge of the subject; and how the academic and experiential learning abroad affect students' perceptions in areas related to the discipline. Students answered questions on a 26-item survey. Nine chapters are as follows: purpose of the study and background on U.S. students abroad; the Education Abroad Program; the study; methodology of the study; results from Goettingen, Grenoble, Jerusalem, and Madrid; and conclusions. Results include the following: almost all instruction was in the language of the host nation, except in Jerusalem, and comprehension of the lectures and readings in the local language was not a problem for most participants; study abroad allows students to step away from their culture, at least temporarily, and thus gain a more objective, less culturally-biased view; and though some students' attitudes changed greatly as a result of study abroad, general political trends such as a move towards the liberal left or conservative right were not discernable. Three appendices are an explanation of individual items in the instrument, the instrument, and actual questions asked of students. Contains 21 references. (SM)
