AbstractThe role of literature in education is examined, and implications for assessment of student understanding of literature are outlined. There are three distinct views of the role of literature in school. Literature is variously construed as an adjunct to the learning of reading and writing, as a subject with its own body of knowledge, and as an aspect of aesthetic perception. Rather than selecting any one of these views, this paper divides the domain of school literature into three interrelated aspects: (1) knowledge; (2) practice; and (3) habit. The interrelationships among these aspects are complex in that knowledge is applied in the various acts that constitute the practices and habits, and the practices and habits can influence knowledge. It is suggested, however, that these three aspects can be distinguished for the purpose of curriculum planning, and their separability is demonstrated for the purpose of testing. The testing approach, developed by the Center for the Learning and Teaching of Literature at the University of Albany (New York), involves six tests covering short stories, poetry, and non-fiction articles. Test items cover surface understanding, comprehension, text structure, and figurative language. Likert scales are used to measure aesthetic judgment, and a questionnaire is used to assess reading habits. (TJH)
