Abstract | The three concept areas defined in this curriculum guide are: (1) space and structure, (2) movement, and (3) color and light. Each concept area contains five objectives that students are expected to meet by the end of the eighth grade. For example, the space and structure concept has as its fifth objective "to recognize that an artist manipulates space and structure through the character of the medium to achieve visual results." Each objective includes a rationale, a problem statement, and a list of alternative approaches. Suggestions are given on how to evaluate and grade students. A sample curriculum unit covers five weeks of instruction, and contains work assignments, teacher and student aims, discussion suggestions, and a lesson planning format. The appendices include: (1) a sequence chart on the relationship of art objectives to instructional time; (2) guidelines for acceleration; (3) a list of picture resources; (4) a progress assessment form; (5) a concept contract and checklist for student presentations; (6) a skills and attitudes assessment form; and (7) guidelines on alternative techniques for students with handicapping conditions.
