Abstract | A method pertaining to the identification and analysis of course objectives is discussed. A framework is developed by which post facto objectives can be determined and students' attainment of the objectives can be assessed. The method can also be used for examining the quality of instruction. Using this method, it is possible to determine mathematics course objectives and the attainment of these objectives by the group of students who passed the course. Subjects of the study were 816 first-year engineering students, enrolled in a university program during the 1970-1973 period. The students were administered quarterly open-question examinations during the first three quarters of each year. The retrospective analysis data were collected in 1976. The exploratory character of this research suggests that conclusions from the data must be considered merely as illustrations of the type of questions that can be analyzed within the proposed framework.
