| Abstract | This book is an updated version of the Texas Office of Early Childhood Development's 1974 publication, "46 Things You Need to Know About Texas Children: The Darker Side of Childhood." This update targets all Texan children in need, from birth through 12 years of age. It contains facts about disadvantaged children from low-income settings and information about middle-class children who are in need of quality child care and rural children who are in need of quality education. The book is divided into eight sections: (1) "A Texas Profile" gives overall changes in the state's population, economy, and workforce; (2) "Families in Poverty" chronicles the problems of poverty and the growing underclass; (3) "Services" indicates service areas that need to be improved in order to address the needs of poor children and their families; (4) "Health" refers to the child's growth and development; (5) "Education" addresses a child's future opportunities; (6) "Abused and Troubled Children" refers to troubled families, runaways, and victims of abuse; (7) "Child Care" targets the working mother and the unattended child; and (8) "Toward Prevention" points to programs and services that can critically improve the lives of many Texas children while reducing the need for costly expenditures in later years.
