AbstractThis study investigated the community adjustment of individuals with mental retardation who were former residents of the Manitoba Development Centre (MDC) in Canada. The study explored the combined effects of personal factors, residential factors, and neighborhood attitudes on community adjustment, to identify the best set of predictors of community adjustment. The study focused on 91 former residents of the MDC who were released from the institution and who were living in the community at the time of the sampling, and 24 residents who were released but subsequently returned to live in the institution. Data were collected from MDC files; surveys of subjects, mental retardation workers, and 243 neighbors of community residents; and participant observation techniques with the community sample. Findings concerning the community sample include: (1) most (79%) lived in community residential facilities with paid staff, while a few lived independently or with parents; (2) virtually no community subjects participated in organized recreational activities with the non-handicapped in the community; (3) 74% were working, almost all in some kind of sheltered employment; (4) overall attitudes of the neighbors were quite positive; and (5) quality of life was quite satisfactory. Predictors determining community living or reinstitutionalization were the availability of a helper, subject's independent living skills, number of times re-admitted to the MDC, and behavior rating by the residential supervisor.
