Abstract | This combined proceedings document presents the highlights of two historic national events: the First National Congress and the 1988 National Conference on Adults with Special Learning Needs. A summary of the Congress discusses the theme of empowerment and the declaration adopted calling for the adult and continuing education community to address the special learning needs of adults into the 21st century. The declaration is provided. The conference proceedings summarize the presentations. The recommendations from the First National Congress are discussed first. They relate to four questions posed at the Congress: who are the adults with special learning needs; how do these adults learn as adults; what do they want to learn; and who cares about adults with special learning needs? Highlights from presentations on the following themes are also provided: creating lifelong learning opportunities for adults with special learning needs; federal, state, and local collaborative efforts; building effective literacy programs for adults who have different learning styles; learning styles and instructional approaches for learning disabled, deaf and hearing impaired, blind and partially sighted, and mentally ill adults; building linkages among associations; and the handicap of illiteracy. The appendix contains the conference agenda, which provides brief summaries of the presentations. (YLB) |
