AbstractThis report surveys data from various Kentucky state government agencies and provides an assessment of economic problems in Kentucky's Appalachian region. A profile of the region and overview of the effectiveness of implemented programs are presented. Interviews with Area Development District Directors show a concern for the image of Appalachia. The data indicate that Kentucky has a division in its economic structure, where prosperity and high employment are primarily concentrated in certain metropolitan centers such as the Louisville-Covington-Newport area in the north-central part of the state. The western counties also have problems, but none as serious as those in the eastern Appalachian counties, which are in critical economic condition. The report raises the question, "Is there a more equitable way to distribute Kentucky's tremendous wealth?" This report and accompanying data may be useful to educational planners and policymakers in assessing training needs and economic trends that affect education. Suggestions for additional research to address the issue are listed. This report contains six tables and seven indices that list data relating to income, employment, and trends for Area Development Districts and individual counties. (ALL)
