AbstractA process by which institutions of higher education can plan for change with the times, come to terms with the dynamics of change, and initiate adaptation to a perceived future is presented. This guide is intended to be an outline for action that can be adapted to the diverse range of operations and governance current in American colleges and universities. It presents a revision of the "Futures-Creating Paradigm" model developed a decade ago by the Resource Center of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). A method for interdisciplinary policy planning is provided and includes planning exercises to help academic advisors anticipate social, political, and economic trends and incorporate them into their mission and policy goals. The 10 planning stages to be considered are: defining external and internal influences; building a matrix for policy development; formulating institutional objectives; examining the compatibility of objectives; designing an evaluation and assessment plan; planning strategies for implementation; examining feasibility; formulating the policy statements; presenting the plan; and revisiting the plan. Each section includes details on the topic as well as worksheets to assist in the planning process. (SM)
