Abstract | This manual is designed to assist administrators and counselors in adult basic education programs in implementing the group career counseling model. Section I focuses on administering adult career counseling centers. Topics include establishing a service and managing a center. A checklist for administrators is provided for use as a reference in developing, maintaining, and evaluating their programs. Section II describes the Adult Career Counseling Model. The first part reviews the philosophical and professional foundations for effective adult career counseling. The second part describes the Career Development Workshop, which is to be conducted in a group counseling format. Materials are provided for the seven two-hour sessions and one-hour individual counseling session that comprise the workshop. Each session is composed of these components: goals; objectives; outline of activities, materials, and handouts; activities with counselor instructions and process; and handouts. Section III provides information on adapting the model for literacy students. It makes suggestions for preparing for the Career Development Workshop, has recommendations for adapting the model for English-as-a-Second Language students, gives specific suggestions for each session of the model, and includes revised materials and bibliographies. Sample forms are appended. (YLB) |
